I Gave Up Everything to Get My Life Back

Lots of people tell me that it was easy for me to get better or that I must not have been that sick to begin with. Mind you, these are people in the Fibro community who don't even know me. My posts are upbeat and cheery and happy with a lot of positivity and hope. It seems to be, that the majority don't believe that anyone can go into fibromyalgia remission, anyway. These poor people are so stuck being miserable, that they can't see beyond that misery to heal themselves and get their lives back.

I'm an easy target because of my upbeat, positive attitude when it comes to Fibromyalgia and getting better. I really can't blame them. That was me a couple of years ago. My utter misery is one of the things that got me into this whole fibromyalgia mess to begin with.

What people don't see is everything that I have given up to get my life back. Some of the things I had to give up are things that I loved and thought I would die without, like coffee. Some were bad for me, like my bad attitude. Here's a list of things that I gave up in order to heal from Fibromyalgia, the good the bad and the ugly.

1. Drinking

2. Smoking (I smoked for 25 years)

3. Type “A” must get everything done personality

4. Pride

5. Anger

6. Bitterness

7. Self-pity

8. Self-hatred

9. Hatred

10. Destructive relationships

11. Destructive working environments

12. Came to terms with past hurts from others (for the most part)

13. Being continuously on edge

14. Taking a hands-on approach even if things will upset me

15. Watching the news

16. Coffee and my fancy flavored syrups

17. Pop addiction

18. Pizza

19. Cookies, candies, ice cream, chips, brownies, cakes, treats, snacks (junk food)

20. Sugar

21. Anything with any kind of gluten in it

22. Almost anything with any kind of “non gluten” grain in it (fake cookies, brownies, cakes, etc.)

23. Almost all fruit (Avocado, blackberries, cantaloupe, cranberries, grapes, prunes, raspberrie, watermelon, pineapple, oranges, blueberries, strawberries, lemons, limes, and 1000 more)

24. Peanuts, Peanut butter, and all other legumes (this includes hummus)

25. Anything with any kind of corn that goes for tortillas and corn syrup

26. Anything with any kind of citric acid (they put citric acid in everything. It's used in almost every prepackaged item, so I can't eat it)

27. Nightshades (this includes tomatoes, white potatoes, hash Browns, French fries, corn beef hash, even flours or foods that have potato starch in it (in processed meats), any kind of pepper (Bell, red, hot, sweet, paprika [that means no hotdogs, no sausage, no Indian food, no hot and spicy food, no Mexican food, No hot sauce], eggplant, ashwagandha, tobacco, goji berries (but who eats those anyway)

28. No spaghetti or pasta or tomato sauce or any other kind of sauce for that matter. If it's a sauce I can't eat it

29. No dairy, milk, cheese, creams, sauces

30. Most vegetables, carrots, sweet potatoes, beets, green beans, peas, pumpkin, spaghetti squash, butternut squash, any kind of squash, zucchini

31. Anything with any nitrites, nitrates, sulfites, sulfates

32. Nothing with artificial flavors or colors

33. Nothing with natural flavors or colors (unless it specifically states what fruit or vegetable it comes from)

34. Nothing with MSG (see above natural flavors, that's MSG)

35. Anything with any kind of yeast (that goes for nutritional yeast also)

36. No going out to dinner

That's a pretty extensive list right there and if I worked a little harder at it, I'm sure I could come up with probably 100 more things. So, when people get on me about how I must not have been that sick or I must not have been that bad, it rubs me the wrong way. Then I follow number 14 and just walk away.

I have pretty much died to my old self and have started anew to create a brand-new life that has healed me from fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome. Sometimes, it's a fine line of that one thing that can drive you back over the edge to being ill. I do not compromise anything for my health. Not one thing.

Mind you, I don't do these things EVERY SINGLE DAY. I don't take a day off from not doing them and I don't slack.

I'm proud to say that I gave up everything to get my life back. In turn, I have been given everything.
